TEAM WET PLANET

    Jonathan Blum

This season will be Jonathan's second full year with the Wet Planet. He came here at the end of the 2005 season with a recommendation from fellow Wet Planet guide Jason Luker who he knew from guiding on the Skykomish River. His first trip with Wet Planet came the day after returning from 7 months of travelling. His entire crew came back with huge smiles on their faces, and we knew we had to keep him!

Born and raised in the whitewater mecca of Eugene, Oregon, Jonathan’s been on the river since his early years. He had his first rowing experience at age 3, and started guiding in Oregon and Washington at age 16. He has spent his summers since on some of the Northwest’s classic rivers such as the McKenzie, Deschutes, Rogue, Skykomish and Green River Gorge.

Jonathan came into his first commercial rafting job hitch-hiking a shuttle after guiding friends down a Class IV+ river in Oregon. An owner of a local company picked him up and offered him a job on the spot.

Growing up in a town full of pro boaters, Jonathan was inspired by and learned from some of the country’s best whitewater boaters. In the last 3 years he has paddled throughout the U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, and New Zealand in search of great whitewater paddling. He is an ACA Certified Whitewater Kayaking Instructor, and is a patient and dedicated teacher. He shares his love and passion for the river to all of his students.

Since graduating from the University of Puget Sound in 2006, Jonathan has been with Wet Planet full time, and currently works as a rafting trip leader and kayak instructor. Throughout his four years in college he was quite busy and was instrumental in getting a lot of things started, including:

  • Co-founding a magazine that is now nationally distributed to more than 50,000 students quarterly
  • Founding a kayaking club with more than 100 members at the University of Puget Sound
  • Fundraising more than $5000 for gear for the kayaking club
  • Studying abroad in New Zealand for 7 months
  • Founding the Liquid Gravity Film Festival showcasing student-made outdoor films
  • Boating every weekend for 2 years of college
  • Leading Puget Sound Outdoors trips in kayaking, climbing, and mountaineering

Jonathan’s plans after graduation include teaching kayaking and guiding raft trips (for Wet Planet of course), and traveling all over the world in search of amazing boating. Destinations in the near future include Peru (Fall 2007) and Chile (Winter 2007). You can check out all of his adventures on his Web site at www.daysontheriver.com.
