- Why Wet Planet
Course Requirements: Good health and a positive attitude, no prior experience necessary.
At Wet Planet we have an amazing wealth of river experience. Our guides, instructors, and staff have lived and worked in river communities all over the United States and internationally. From ½ day commercial trips to remote multi-week expeditions, our extensive experience and passion for river travel has helped us to become a professional leader in the river sports industry. We love being on the river, and love sharing our river experience with future guides and river travelers.
We offer a full 4 day Owyhee River multi-day raft trip as a part of the Guide School curriculum! Students can now learn the logistics of overnight raft trips, while practicing their guiding and rescue skills throughout the day.
Optional: to complete a River Rescue certification through Rescue 3 International
Who is the course for? For those who wish to seek employment in the river industry and for those who wish to learn the skills needed to captain/guide their own raft, as well as lead and organize a successful multi-day river trip.
Rivers Utilized for Training (depending upon water level):
Price: $695, including: a 4-day multi-day raft trip on Oregon’s Owyhee River, all instruction and course materials, lunch each day (plus all meals on the multi-day trip), any gear and equipment needed, and shuttle to each river.
Optional Guide School Specials: First Aid and CPR training is offered optionally during the Guide School, with an additional $40 fee. Optional class V rafting trip on the Wind River is offered at a special $65 Guide School rate, discounted from $115 (discount valid only during season in which Guide School was completed).
Wet Planet Guide School participants can also receive 25% off the course cost of our RRC or RRC-Pro courses held in April. The 2-day River Rescue Certification (RRC) course is designed for private paddlers, while the 3-day River Rescue Certification Pro (RRC-Pro) is designed for boaters who will work as guides or instructors in the whitewater industry. These courses meet the requirements for either RRC or RRC-Pro certification by Rescue 3 International (discount only valid for the RRC and RRC-Pro courses held in April in which Guide School was completed).
What to Bring: Be prepared to be in the river in cold, wet weather. We recommend a dry-suit for maximum comfort. If you don’t have your own gear, we can provide pfd, helmet, wet-suits, splash jackets, and booties. We will provide a full packing list for the multi-day portion of the course.
Location: All weekend classes will be based out of the Wet Planet headquarters. You are welcome to pitch a tent and use the facilities. All transportation to and from rivers will be taken care of by Wet Planet. Travel for the Owyhee overnight trip will also meet at our headquarters before embarking as a group to the put-in, in southeastern Oregon.
Employment at Wet Planet: Wet Planet typically has very low employee turnover, hiring is competitive each season, and we hire guides with prior whitewater experience. Employment at Wet Planet after successful completion of the guide school is not guaranteed, and our guide school should not be considered as Wet Planet job training. Employment with Wet Planet depends upon skill level, personal dedication, and the company’s needs. For those wishing to work in the whitewater industry after the course, we will help you determine appropriate rivers. Please realize that developing the skills needed to guide a raft commercially takes lots of practice, even after completion of guide school. While the Wet Planet Guide School will help provide the skills you need to apply to guide in the whitewater industry, each company you might work for will have its own training process in order to make sure you learn that particular company’s practices and rivers.
