Salmon River Idaho Multi-Day Kayak Course
Difficulty: Class II - III
Ages: 12 +
Dates: August 16-20, 2010
Price: $1170
Length: 5 Days
Join the Wet Planet Kayaking instructors for a multi-day kayaking journey down the Lower Salmon River. This incredible wilderness stretch of river is a great place for beginner and intermediate kayakers to develop both river running and play-boating skills. Over the course of 5 days and 53 miles, the Wet Planet instructors will constantly be at hand to both support you in the whitewater and to help you improve your skills. This amazing 5 day kayaking course is raft supported, so you won't have to worry about carrying your food or equipment as we move from camp to camp.
We invite you to join us for a 5 day kayaking adventure on the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states.
The Lower Gorge of the Salmon perpetually carves its way through history to expose metamorphosed volcanic and ominous granite gorges. To compliment the gorges, roomy white sand beaches are common on this 53 mile stretch of river – perfect for camping, swimming, or taking an afternoon nap. Catch a glimpse of a river otter, cougar, bear, golden eagle, or bighorn sheep in this diverse landscape. Visit river crossings used by the Nez Perce Indians in their flight from the U.S. Calvary in 1877.
For many of our guests, the time spent at camp is as enjoyable as the time spent floating on the river. After an exciting day on the river, your instructors and guides will cook you a healthy and delicious meal while you relax at the river’s edge on warm sand beaches. In the evening, campfires (weather permitting), songs, and stories will carry you to a fulfilling night’s sleep.
Difficulty: Class II - III;
Beginners / Intermediate (beginner kayakers must have previously taken a 2-day beginner course; call us if you have questions about your skill level)
Check out the itinerary for our Salmon River kayaking course:
Day 1: Wet Planet will travel from our base in Washington to the put-in. You are welcome to join us in Washington or meet us in Lewiston, Idaho. We'll meet our raft support and camp at Pine Bar in preparation for the start of our river trip on the following morning.
Day 2 (11 miles): this is the first day of our river journey. The river starts off with easy rapids and a big water feel. You'll get a chance to find your rhythm while working with your instructors in the flat water and class II rapids. Depending on water levels, we may camp near Cliff Rapids to take advantage of a fun play wave.
Day 3 (11 miles): this day brings bigger rapids and more fun play spots. You'll find rapids such as Pipe Line, Lorna's Lulu, and the Bungholes as your move toward Snow Hole Canyon. Located in this beautiful canyon is Snow Hole Rapid, where the rivers charges through powerful class III+ and IV waves and holes. Challenge your skills here or walk around the rapid before finishing the day at a beautiful large beach camp site.
Day 4 (20 miles): After exiting Snow Hole Canyon, you'll enjoy a mellower float on your way to Blue Hole Canyon. This canyon is home to more great rapids, and you'll love flying right down the middle of rapids like Sluice Box and Eye of the Needle. The exit to this exciting canyon leads to the confluence with the Snake River. You'll camp at the confluence, in the same area where Native Americans previously traveled for vision quests.
Day 5 (heading to the take-out): with quite a bit of flat water between the confluence and camp, you'll hop in the rafts and enjoy an easy ride through this beautiful, remote stretch of river. At the confluence, you'll pick up your vehicles or head back to Washington with the Wet Planet instructors.
Come join Wet Planet on Idaho’s most popular river. Improve your river running skills, learn some new play-boating skills, and just soak up some sun on this 5 day kayaking adventure. All kayaking gear, camping equipment, and meals included.
