Day 2 - Wet Planeteer’s Kids’ Kayaking Course

It's just keeps getting bigger and better . . . . I can't believe the second day is over already!

We started the morning out with a bunch of fun games on land at the Wet Planet base. These games were super fun, yet shared some important information about kayaking. We practiced our aim with the throw bag toss and learned all about paddle signals.

Next, we headed out to the Klickitat River, it was a fun road trip, as this river is about 15 miles east of the Wet Planet World Headquarters. We parked ourselves at a section of river that supplied us with a big, calm eddy and a little bit of moving water. This was a little step up from Day 1, but still the concentration was on having fun in our bright, colorful tupperware containers smile

Before lunch, we practiced how to swim (or float) in moving water, along with how to hold on to a throw rope if one is tossed to us. After this we paddled around and played a few more games . . . before we knew it, tummies were growling and we were off to lunch.

After lunch, all the kids "seal launced" (sliding into the water in our kayaks) from a 3 foot rock shelf. Many laughs and screams of excitement echoed down the river. A few brave souls, seal launched in backwards.

For a few minutes after lunch, it was called "Focus Time". All the kids had to focus and we explained what eddies were and how to get in and out of them. To my amazement, the returning students remembered all the important steps to successfulyl do this. And, the new students . . . it was simply amazing how they figured it out and asked some very intelligent questions about the current. Smart, smart kids . . .

After we paddled back to where our vehicle was parked, we ended the day with "Piano Keys" . . . all the kids participated today and every single one of them with giggles and smiles smile A successful day for students and instructors.

Can't wait until Day 3 . . .
