PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
First RiverFest & Educational
Seminar on the White Salmon River.
This Wednesday June 7th, rafting guides,
outfitters, kayakers and other people passionate about the White
Salmon River will be coming together to educate themselves and
share information about the White Salmon River. In line with a concept
originally created by the California based Headwaters Institute,
a handful of volunteers with a passion for the White Salmon River
and an interest in the conservation of this special river, have
designed an educational one-day event, full of sessions dedicated
to natural history topics pertinent to the White Salmon watershed.
The Headwaters Institute works with guides
of human-powered water based outdoor travel. The mission and goal
of the Headwaters Institute and the organizers of the White Salmon
RiverFest & Symposium is to provide education during a fun and
informal event which brings together and inspires individuals within
the community to care for and connect with our watershed. Since
1996, the Headwaters Institute has sponsored over 71 educational
seminars and trained over 5,136 guides. These guides have in turn
had 1.8 million contact days with the recreating public.
A fantastic line up of speakers will cover
a wide variety of topics, ranging from the pending removal of Condit
Dam, to the White Salmon River as a Wild
& Scenic River, to the historic and future Native American
uses of the river. The educational event will be followed by a “boaters”
party in the evening, featuring music by White Salmon rafter &
kayaker and well known musician Richard Tillinghast with band Onehum.
All events will take place at the Wind
River Cellars Winery. The winery has traditionally had strong ties
with the whitewater community on the White Salmon River and has
often supported events organized by the paddling community.
Sponsors & supporters of the event include
local businesses and organizations such as Acres Organic Café
(owner Kristi is an avid paddler and will be catering dinner), the
Kayak Shed, Aldercreek, OutdoorPlay, Full Sail, SprightDesign, Columbia
Riverkeeper, Gifford Pinchot Task Force, Friends of the White Salmon
River, Friends of the Gorge, and Wet Planet (offering Rafting
& Kayaking in Oregon and Washington) Wet Planet co-owner
Jaco Klinkenberg took the first initiative for the event and is
the lead coordinator.
